Science|Business Integrators
From widening to integrating: Towards a true pan-European R&I ecosystem
The Science|Business Integrators is an initiative designed to help strengthen Europe’s research and innovation (R&I) ecosystem by advancing the integration of capabilities, investments and the knkowldge value chain across all member states and neighbouring countries. Driven by a steering group of public and private organisations committed to capacity-building and systemic change, the initiative provides a unique platform to connect key actors who are eager to bridge the innovation gap across geographies, enhance convergence between national and regional innovation systems, and contribute to the establishment of a single market for R&I in Europe.
Building on the foundations of the Science|Business “Widening” group, launched in 2022, the scope of the Integrators reflects Europe’s vision for the next multiannual budget cycle (2028-2034), which is focused on excellence, competitiveness, security, resilience and autonomy. Going beyond the future of Horizon Europe, the initiative serves as a policy incubator and a meeting point for the people and institutions that can power the EU’s innovation agenda, the European Research Area and, more broadly, Europe’s technological, economic and societal ambitions. To achieve the “One Europe. One Market” agenda advanced by Enrico Letta, the debate must involve decision makers from across all of Europe. In order to succeed, this ambitious plan will need both evangelists and practitioners.
In practice, the initiative regularly brings together policymakers, research leaders, industry representatives and funders in high-level policy dialogues, in private and public settings, around topics jointly identified by its members – such as security, career development, the “fifth freedom” and enlargement. As a principle, those policy discussions are rooted within national and regional ecosystems, from Tallinn to Skopje, from Sofia to Brussels. Their impact is further amplified through the Science|Business R&D Express, a specialised news service dedicated to tracking how national reforms and investments in CEE, as well as cross-border initiatives, are helping the EU strengthen its science and technology base.
The steering group for the Science|Business Integrators is chaired by Edit Herczog, a former MEP from Hungary now advising several organisations with strategic interests in pan-European R&I matters.
