ACES 2008

THE SCIENCE|BUSINESS ROUND TABLES

Science|Business is about connecting buyers and sellers of emerging technologies - and it organizes a regular series of special events and reports to help that happen. To see what we did last year, have a look at the events we ran in 2006.

To see what we’ve done this year, and what we’re going to do, here is our agenda so far for 2007. Please contact terri.robinson@sciencebusiness.net for more details.

The 5th Freedom: Research in Europe

A pan-European “town meeting” with the EU Research Commissioner

12 June 2007, Brussels and beyond

Supported by:
EIRMA - EuropaBio - Microsoft - Procter & Gamble - SAS

The Commission is seeking public comment on its R&D Green Paper through 31 August, and will incorporate public views into policy proposals it will bring forward in 2008. To broaden the debate, the Science|Business news network is organising a “town meeting” among researchers and EU Research and Science Commissioner Janez Potocnik. It will take place in Brussels at a gathering of academic and industrial researchers, and link via Internet to satellite meetings on university campuses across Europe.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY: Finding a way through the policy maze

Spring 2007.

Roundtable luncheon-debate with 25 leaders in policy, industry and academia.

Open sponsorship opportunity!

Patent reform is one of those classic European tangles: An unspeakably complicated and expensive system that, so far, has proven impervious to change. But hope springs eternal, and Internal Markets Commissioner Charlie McCreevy is trying yet again this year to broker a political compromise among the warring member-states. At stake is the competitivity of European industry - in biotech, ICT, energy and every other research-intensive field.

Science|Business wants to see some new ideas on the table, to help break the logjam. It invites them from academic and industry experts across Europe, for inclusion in a special report on Intellectual Property and airing at a Roundtable luncheon-debate.

THE INNOVATION BOARD: The experts speak on EU policy

20th June 2007, at Imperial College London (by invitation only)

When it comes to making Europe more competitive, there is no lack of suggestions - but a definite lack of action. It's time to get real, and focused.

Science|Business, in collaboration with Imperial College London, is organizing a blue-ribbon panel of 12 leaders from industry, academia and policy to assess what works and what needs improvement in European innovation policy. The result will be a direct, and succinct, statement of action.

BIO-FUELS, FOODS and FACTORIES: An investing forum

Autumn 2007

With concerns rising about environmental sustainability, investors around the world have tuned into new bio-based technologies. This includes biofuels, now embraced by policy leaders in Washington, Brussels and elsewhere - but it goes far beyond. There are new applications of biotechnologies in other parts of the energy industry, in the food-processing industry, and in other areas of "white", or industrial, biotechnology.

This Science|Business forum, with its network of participating universities, throws a spotlight on the new technologies, research centres and enterprises that are leading this trend. A special report will highlight the newest developments, while a one-day forum will help hot new spin-outs and researchers connect with industrial companies and venture capitalists across Europe.

THE BIO-ECONOMY: Picking winners in the 21st century

Autumn 2007

Among the "mega-trends" that will shape this century is the growth of the bio-economy: The fast-growing collection of industries - from healthcare to energy - that draw on our emerging biotechnologies. It's partly a matter of demographic destiny: As the population ages, healthcare will consumer more of our resources. But it's also a matter of scientific inevitability: So fast are the biological sciences evolving that they're already changing the way we fill our car tanks, make our clothing, run our process factories and, of course, preserve our health. Smart investors already know this: For the past few years, bio-related investments have consumed more early-stage capital than ICT investments - a watershed development.

This Science|Business forum, with its network of participating universities, will provide unique insight into the future of this industrial mega-trend: Which industries will be affected, how and how much? A special report will highlight the newest developments, while a one-day forum will help hot new spin-outs and researchers connect with industrial companies and venture capitalists across Europe.
