After ten years of successful cooperation on the Garching Campus, the Technical University Munich (TUM) and GE Global Research sign a new framework agreement today in order to intensify their research cooperation. The next joint project will be setting up a worldwide unique laboratory for the development of new gas turbine technologies. The Free State of Bavaria does also contribute to the funding which amounts to about EUR13m.
Since GE Global Research Europe decided on the location at the Campus Garching ten years ago, the research and development centre has become an important partner to the Technical University Munich concerning the core research subjects of energy, mobility and health. The cooperation covers the fields of turbines and compressors, carbon composites as well as medical technology. Now, the partners want to expand their cooperation and have therefore signed a new framework agreement as legal basis for numerous research projects.
The laboratory has already been planned and follows the joint radial compressor test facility that led to achievements in the optimisation of gas compression over the recent years – an important factor for increasing the efficiency of gas turbines. In future, researchers will also be able to test axial compressors and thus work with the whole range of high speed compressors that are used in aircraft engines, energy generation or the oil and gas industry. They want to study how several components of gas compression interact. The project is unique in its multidisciplinary approach and variability.
