The two universities signed an agreement to create a joint research laboratory devoted to automation and robotics. The two universities also announced a new joint master’s degree in civil engineering.

The Rector of the Alma Mater University of Bologna, Ivano Dionigi, and the President of the Academic Senate of Tongji, Zhou Zhuy, signed two agreements that expand the academic collaboration activities started some years ago. The first protocol establishes a joint research laboratory devoted to automation and robotics in Shanghai, and it will work in partnership with the already active robotics lab in Bologna. The second protocol announces the launch of a new joint degree in building processes and systems engineering with a focus on processes and systems for the rehabilitation of historic buildings.

Professors, researchers and PhD students of both universities will use the lab for advanced research projects, technology transfer and innovation activities, in close cooperation with Chinese and Italian companies. This is the beginning of a partnership aimed at addressing the technological challenges in robotics that require high value human resources and high level equipment and infrastructures.

The joint master’s degree in engineering processes and building systems aims at training experts in the field of rehabilitation of historic buildings. Given the expertise of the two universities in this field, the program aims to train young talents of different cultures and skills to be able to help maintain and restore historic buildings, and to protect the historic and the cultural heritage of architecture.

The University of Bologna also opened a photography exhibition illustrating the competences and activities available at Tongji University. The exhibition aims to promote Tongji and  opportunities for academic mobility facilitated by the signed agreements.
