BTG licenses online-tracking patents to Netflix, settling lawsuit
Licence / Internet
London, UK, 15 August 2005
BTG plc has settled its patent-infringement suit against US online-DVD retailer Netflix Inc, granting the company a non-exclusive license. Neither company disclosed financial terms of the settlement. BTG, a UK company that acquires and commercializes technologies from many sources, had sued Netflix, Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com and Overstock.com in the U.S. District Court in Delaware in September 2004, alleging infringement of a group of patents BTG acquired. They covered technology for tracking the navigational path of an Internet user - important for online marketing programs. With the Netflix settlement behind it, BTG said it plans to move "vigorously" to continue the suit against the other three companies, and expects the "revenue potential" of the case to BTG to be "of material significance."
