It’s tough to spin out a company from a university in Europe. Read about those who have done it – and may be named the winners of the first pan-European awards for university spin-outs in Stockholm on 2 December.
To celebrate these researchers-turned-entrepreneurs, on 2 December in Stockholm the Science|Business Innovation Board, a blue-ribbon panel of leaders in industry, academia and policy, will pick the winners of the first pan-European awards for university enterprise. Read more
Finalists named in university spin-out awards, Science|Business, 12 November 2008

Andrew Lynn from the University of Cambridge and Conor Hanley from University College Dublin, are among 24 entrepreneurs named as finalists in the first pan-European awards for researchers who start businesses.
A selection committee of leading tech transfer professionals, industry officials and academics, meeting yesterday at University College London, selected the entrepreneurs from nominations across Europe. The 24 finalists will go through to the final round of judging, by the Science|Business Innovation Board, in Stockholm on 2 December. Read more

Four university researchers who had the nerve, the skills and the courage to cast off the cosy embrace of academe and test their entrepreneurial mettle spoke of their experiences at a fringe meeting at the ESOF conference in Barcelona this week.
The meeting was organised by Science|Business as part of the Academic Enterprise Awards Europe 2008 (ACES), the first Europe-wide programme to recognise academics who go out on a limb to commercialise their research. The four companies are nominated for the awards. Read more
Bringing down the barriers to technology transfer, Science|Business, 23 July 2008

The principal obstacle to productive collaboration between industry and academe in Europe is the gap in cultures, according to the results of a survey carried out by Science|Business of delegates at the Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF) conference, Europe’s showcase for its research, held in Barcelona this week.
Conflict over the goals of joint research was the second most common problem cited by both academe and industry, with 62 percent of business executives saying that university researchers, “Don’t understand business or market demands.” Read more
